Lying Fold

If you have 3 days in El Chaltén, this circuit is the most recommended to complement the visit of the area, as it provides a real magnitude of the whole area, with ideal panoramic points to take pictures. The trailhead is located at the entrance of the town, right at the National Parks Administrative Headquarters. At the beginning of the hike we cross a small log bridge that crosses a beautiful stream, which after an ascent we will have it on our left, just a little more, we get to see a stone that stands out, and that draws attention for being in perfect balance, and then, we begin to cross charming forests of lenga and ñires, reaching an open sky area, called "Pampa de las Carretas", with a wide and beautiful view of the massifs of Fitz Roy Torre and Cerro Huemul. Then, the trail goes back into the lush forest, where you can surely identify many birds that inhabit the area. When the forest ends, a more arid and mountainous landscape begins, and the trail continues to the Mirador del Pliegue Tumbado, in this section you can easily find marine fossil remains of ammonites and belemnites of 100 million years old. From this viewpoint, you have a spectacular view of almost the entire area: Fitz Roy river canyon, the Grande glacier, Adela glacier, glacier and Cerro Torre, the Madre and Hija lagoons, the Fitz Roy and you can even see the Laguna Cóndor. In short, you can see the massifs of Fitz Roy Torre and Cerro Huemul. Continuing a 45 minute hike to the Loma del Pliegue Tumbado, the view reaches Lake Viedma, with the Paso del Viento the gateway to the Continental Ice Field.
