Description
Join a trekking ascent to the Buenos Aires Lake Mesa to try spotting the endemic Maca Tobiano, among other birds. Marvel at the great Chelenco Lake and the infinite horizon of the mesa with the Zeballos snow-capped peak in the background.
Itinerary:
Pick up from hotels at 8:00/08:30 am - We start the journey following the Buenos Aires Lake until we enter La Ascensión Estate, a property with over 100 years of history, originally dedicated to sheep farming and recently converted by the Flora and Fauna Foundation towards nature production, currently being our base of operations and one of the main access portals to Patagonia National Park. There we will register and get to know one of the most important conservation projects in the region. We will then begin our approach to the mesa, by 4x4 and through internal estate roads. Finally, we will start our trekking ascent to reach the edge of the mesa, after walking 4km and adding 400 meters of positive elevation. From there we will achieve a 360° panoramic view, composed of the great Buenos Aires Lake and the Andes mountain range to the north and west, and the infinite mesa with the Zeballos snow-capped peak in the background to the south. We will begin its exploration, identifying small volcanic cones that explain its origin, the last snow patches contrasting with the incredible flora of the mesa and finally small water sources, where we will try to enjoy the Maca Tobiano nesting. We will learn about its biological process and understand the problems for its conservation and the importance of its preservation. After a restorative picnic lunch, we will begin to descend our path, reflecting on the intense journey experiencing Patagonia with all five senses. We will arrive at Los Antiguos at 5:30 pm.
